I haven’t been this sore in a while! Wow! Seriously, I am barely walking today… and its all thanks to running 13 miles yesterday. It was my second ever half marathon and im happy to report that I did finish. But the bad news is that I was 9 minutes slower than I did it last year. When you run a long distance like this, several thoughts and feeling run thru your mind. First of all, while you’re lined up at the starting gate, you just look around and you see the thousands of people around you and you soak up the coolness of the event. At this particular marathon, 15,000 people showed up in 45 degree weather to run. About half (I guess) running the full marathon. (hell no!) and the other half do the half marathon. the cool thing is that everyone is equal. Yeah, there are young runners, older runners, runners of all colors, male and female, but the cool thing is, no matter what your income is, what you do for a living, what your religion is, for a few precious hours, everyone is the same. We are all going to be running, sweating, gasping for air, pushing each other to not give up.. I cant really thing of any other event where this many people come together that you get that type of common thread.
Well, maybe we aren’t all equal…because about 5 minutes before the race starts, here “they” come!!! Im talking about the “elite runners.” It actually says the word “elite” on their race bib. Most of them, if not all, are African. They are tall, skinny, chocolate brown skin and could probably out run a tiger if given the chance. These guys fly around the world to participate in runs like these and they always win not only the race, but the cash prize that goes along with them. Somehow, I worked my way up to about 10 feet behind them… I know I cant hang with them but maybe for a minute, I could pace myself to just be in the general vicinity of these dudes.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
THE START GUN FIRES and I haven’t seen those dudes since! OMG! What the hell! These freaking dudes sprint the whole way. I am convinced they were on a flight back to Kenya by the time I got to mile # 2!!!
Let me share another thing with you…about 10 minutes into every run I have EVER DONE, I find myself asking (myself) the same question EVERY TIME!!!
“WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING HERE?” its not a good sign when you are asking yourself that 10 minutes into a 2 hour run!
2 hours and 20 minutes later, it was over. If you’re wondering, that time sucks!!! So many people passed me during the race, I thought I was going to be the last one to finish for sure but they were still coming in even an hour past me. The rest of my Sunday was spent limping, hurting and aching…
Thanks to all of the spectators that came out to cheer and hold up signs. You guys make the run somewhat tolerable and it helps to have your support!
If you can, walk or run a mile or two today. Inside or out, doesn’t matter. Even though it hurts while you’re doing it, the feeling you have after is irreplaceable.
